Is the World’s Longest Train Journey Really Possible?

Whenever possible, we opt for public transport, especially trains. We haven’t flown in years, choosing instead to leave the UK via Eurostar. Our last European vacation was a three-city train journey. Seamlessly completed using Eurostar, NightJet, and Deutsche Bahn.

Our longest train journey to date was for our 15th anniversary. We traveled coast-to-coast in the United States. Starting in Washington, D.C., we journeyed to Portland via San Diego on Amtrak. It was an unforgettable experience. Allowing us to relax, take in the breathtaking scenery, and truly enjoy the adventure.

Recently, I’ve seen more stories about the world’s longest potential train journey—from Portugal to Singapore. It sounds like an extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime trip. Unfortunately, even with my limited knowledge, I know such a journey is impossible at present due to missing rail connections and geopolitical challenges.

When it comes to train travel, my go-to resource is The Man in Seat 61. His website is a goldmine of travel ideas and practical advice. He’s written about the Portugal-to-Singapore route a few times, often explaining why it’s not feasible at the moment. Recently, he posted an informative and detailed piece addressing the logistics and barriers to making the journey, a testament to how frequently he’s asked about it.

Hopefully, one day the missing rail links will be built and the obstacles overcome. Until then, I’ll keep adding to my list of cities visited by sleeper train, savoring the unique charm and adventure that rail travel always delivers.
